Richard Swanson (pictured), CTO and cofounder of SunPower, is the 2010 recipient of the IEEE Jun-ichi Nishizawa medal, which is sponsored by the Federation of Electric Power Companies, Japan, and the Semiconductor Research Foundation, Japan. The medal was awarded for Swanson’s concept and commercialization of high-efficiency point-contact crystalline-silicon solar cell technology.

Barclays Capital raises PV market demand forecast to over 12GW in 2010

Strong market demand that is expected to continue through the second half of 2010 is behind a revision of Barclays Capital global PV demand forecast. With Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic installation figures expected to be significantly higher than the previous year, Barclays Capital now expects 12.2GW installed compared to its previous upbeat forecast of 11GW.
Order Focus: CNPV to supply Inovasol with 46MWp of modules through 2012

CNPV Solar Power has entered into a long-term sales agreement with Inovasol, a French photovoltaic rooftop project development, installation, and distribution company, for the supply of 46MWp of high-performance PV modules from 2010 to 2012, which includes 6MWp of scheduled delivery during H22010. The remaining 15MWp and 25MWp are scheduled for delivery in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
Suntech opens representative office in France

In order to better serve its local partners in France, Suntech has opened a representative office in Montbonnot (Isere). The new facility features a solar product training center for distributors and installers and for professionals to provide hands-on installation training, particularly for Suntech’s BIPV ‘Just Roof’ offering. The office will be also be home to a technical customer support team.
Solarbuzz forecasts solar market at 15.2GW in 2010: Germany at 8GW

Strong demand for solar installations across multiple markets such as Europe, U.S., Japan, and China but especially Germany has forced market research firm Solarbuzz to increase its forecast for the solar industry in 2010. The firm has also made upward adjustments to its 2009 final installation figures to 7.5GW, compared to its previous projection of 7.3GW, issued in April.
Spire receives DOE grant for development of LED based solar simulator

Spire has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy as the recipient of a Small Business Innovation Research grant to develop a next-generation solar simulator, based on LED technology. If successful, the LED-based system could provide advantages of accuracy, reliability, versatility, and cost, according to the company.

Solon and Saint-Gobain Building Distribution have completed the signing of a framework contract, which will see the delivery, over several years, of solar modules with a capacity of over 70MW. SGBDD’s Solarkauf brand, a concept that includes all PV products needed to install a solar power system, will offer solar modules from Solon.
Veeco granted $800,000 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

Veeco Instrument’s St. Paul division was granted $800,000 in matching funds by the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s Office of Energy Security under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The funds will go towards a year-and-half-long project for the expedition of Veeco’s copper-indium-gallium-(di)selenide) (CIGS) deposition equipment technology.
