Green Ads Continued: Johnson Controls & Empire State Building

Apr 7, 2009 – Johnson Controls has a full page ad on the back page of the front section of The New York Times today.  The headline reads, “IN 1931, IT BECAME THE WORLD’S TALLEST BUILDING.  NOW IT WILL BECOME ONE OF THE MOST ENERGY EFFICIENT.”  The picture is of NYC’s Empire State Building prominently standing in front of many other NYC landmark buildings.  The ad goes on to say, “38% more energy efficient.  And in the top 10% of all U.S. office buildings in energy efficiency.”  [Will they still light it up in different colors for various holidays?  Maybe now they'll use LEDs.]  How?  Johnson Controls, a global leader in energy and sustainability, working with a world-class team of energy efficiency experts, has developed an innovative process and blueprint to retrofit the Empire State Building. — Interested?  I guess if you buy a full page ad in these difficult times for print media, you also get some news coverage.  The New York Times ran over a half page article by Mireya Navarro titled, “The Empire State Building Plans a Growth Spurt, Environmentally.“  Here we learrn that the 38% reduction in energy use won’t be accomplished until the $4.4 million renovation is completed in 2013 and that the payback is only 3 years.  That is a quick payback and if it can be done in the Empire State Building it certainly could be done in many other buildings around the US.  Consider that Paul Rode, an executive with Johnson Controls, stated that the original drawings and specifications are not available for the 78-year-old building, making the project more difficult.  Thus, renovations to a younger 20 to 40 year old building should be much easier.
